Why black mold colonizes bathtub caulk — and why the caulk is the key
Bathtub caulk sits at the intersection of two forces mold absolutely loves: persistent moisture and a porous organic surface to feed on. Silicone and latex caulk both develop microscopic fissures over time, and once water gets in — from splashing, steam, or condensation — it can't fully evaporate. Mold spores, which are always present in indoor air, land on that damp surface and begin colonizing within 24 to 48 hours. The dark discoloration you're seeing is their cellular waste and pigmentation, not dirt.
The bathroom environment makes this dramatically worse. A typical shower raises ambient humidity above 80% for extended periods. Without adequate ventilation, that moisture lingers on every cool surface — caulk, grout, tile edges — long after you've dried off and left the room. Once water has been infiltrating a caulk gap for months, it begins to compromise the structural integrity of the surrounding wall. What starts as an aesthetic problem can quietly become a tile-replacement or drywall-replacement job, which costs considerably more. There's also a real but underappreciated respiratory concern: even common household mold species continuously release spores into the air, which can exacerbate asthma and allergy symptoms, particularly in children and elderly household members.

I spent months spraying bleach on this stuff and it would fade for maybe two weeks and then come right back. Finally pulled the caulk out completely — the stuff behind it was soaking wet and there was mold growing on the wall underneath the caulk strip itself. Let it dry for two days with a fan blowing on it, then recaulked with 100% silicone. It's been two months and nothing has come back. The bleach was just treating the symptom.

Ours was really bad in the corners specifically and I genuinely thought we needed a whole bathroom renovation. Turns out we just had zero ventilation — the exhaust fan hadn't worked properly for years and we didn't know. Replaced the fan, re-caulked the corners, and started cracking the window during showers. I tried the "caulk over the old caulk" approach because the old stuff looked okay and I didn't want to deal with removing it. Looked great for about three weeks. Then the mold started showing through the new layer and the whole thing started peeling. Had to remove both layers anyway and start over. Would have saved myself a lot of time if I'd just done it right the first time. Now I always remove the old caulk completely no matter what it looks like.
