I spent two years going back and forth between low-fat and low-carb based on whatever article I'd read that month. Eventually I stopped trying to optimize and just started cooking more vegetables and cutting out the packaged stuff. My cholesterol numbers actually improved more in six months than they had in the previous two years of diet-hopping. I think the obsessing was its own kind of harm.

I'm a type 2 diabetic and the conflicting advice about carbs specifically drove me crazy. My GP said "everything in moderation," the diabetes educator said low-carb, the ADA guidelines at the time were all over the place. What finally helped was getting a continuous glucose monitor for a month — seeing my own blood sugar responses to actual foods cut through all the generic advice immediately. Honestly what helped me most was learning to evaluate the quality of a study rather than just its conclusion. Once I understood the difference between an observational study and a randomized trial, and realized how much of diet advice comes from the weaker type, the noise started making sense.
