How we separated the evidence from the marketing
The supplement industry generates over $50 billion a year in the US alone — which means there is an enormous financial incentive to overstate the evidence for almost every product on the shelf. To cut through that, we went directly to the primary literature: systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials, NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets, and the independent analysis database Examine.com, which rates the strength of evidence for each claimed benefit. We applied a simple standard: a supplement only counts as "worth taking" if there is consistent, replicated, high-quality trial evidence of benefit in people who are deficient or in the relevant population — not just association studies or animal data.

These approaches feel logical and are relentlessly marketed — but the evidence doesn't back them up, and some actively waste money or carry real risk.

Taking a daily multivitamin "just to be safe" — Multiple large Cochrane reviews and the 2024 USPSTF assessment found no reduction in mortality, cardiovascular disease, or cancer from multivitamin use in well-nourished adults; you are very likely paying for expensive urine, and some formulations deliver iron or vitamin A at levels that can be harmful over time.

Assuming you're magnesium- or B12-deficient and self-supplementing without a blood test means you may mask a different problem that needs actual diagnosis and treatment.

I'd been taking seven different supplements every morning for about two years — spent roughly $120 a month. I looked up every supplement I was taking on Examine.com — it took about an hour. The only ones with strong evidence for my goals (sleep and gym performance) were magnesium glycinate and creatine monohydrate. Everything else — the ashwagandha, the collagen powder, the greens blend — had either weak evidence or evidence only for very specific conditions I don't have. Cut my supplement spending in half and the two I kept are genuinely working.

The blood test idea was genuinely useful — found out my B12 was borderline low, which explained a lot of the fatigue I'd been attributing to stress. Started a methylcobalamin supplement (NSF certified) and my levels normalized within three months. What didn't fully pan out: my doctor wasn't keen on testing magnesium via standard serum test, saying it's not very accurate — so that one is still an ongoing conversation. The framework is right, just know that some of this requires persistence with your doctor.
