I'd been getting a fluttery sensation in my chest for about two months — always in the evenings after work. I kept a log for ten days and realised I was having three or four coffees a day and barely drinking water. I cut back to one coffee before noon and started drinking two litres of water a day. The palpitations stopped within a week. I did also see my GP and get an ECG, which was completely normal, but honestly I think the caffeine and dehydration were entirely it.

Mine turned out to be SVT — supraventricular tachycardia. I'd been having episodes for about eight months where my heart would suddenly race to 180bpm for anywhere from two minutes to half an hour, then stop abruptly. I kept being told it was anxiety. Finally pushed for a Holter monitor, which caught an episode and made the diagnosis clear. I had a catheter ablation procedure six months ago and I've had zero episodes since. The key was insisting on the monitor, not accepting "it's probably stress" as a final answer.

I cut out caffeine and alcohol completely and the palpitations did reduce — from maybe twice a day to a couple of times a week. But they didn't disappear entirely. My GP found my thyroid was mildly underactive, which apparently can cause ectopic beats. I'm now on levothyroxine and things have improved significantly, though I still get the odd one. Worth getting the full blood panel even if you think lifestyle is the culprit, because there can be an additional underlying cause running quietly in the background.
