I had asthma since my 30s and it was genuinely getting out of hand in my 50s — I was using my rescue inhaler almost every day and chalking it up to getting older. My new pulmonologist ran a blood eosinophil panel and it came back very elevated. She put me on mepolizumab injections and within three months my rescue inhaler use dropped to nearly zero. I wish I'd pushed for a specialist years earlier instead of just accepting the annual prescription renewal from my GP.

The single biggest change for me was getting tested for GERD. I had no idea I had silent acid reflux — no heartburn, nothing obvious — but once I was diagnosed and started treating it with a PPI and some dietary changes, my nighttime asthma symptoms almost completely disappeared. My allergist was the one who suggested the connection after I described waking up coughing. I'd been on the same asthma medication for six years with no one ever asking about reflux.

I did the trigger diary thing and it helped me identify that my symptoms were worst in my bedroom and worst in winter — classic dust mite signs. I bought allergen-proof pillow and mattress covers and a decent HEPA filter for the bedroom, and my nighttime symptoms improved noticeably. Daytime symptoms are still a work in progress, so I'm now pursuing allergy testing to see if there's something at work triggering me too. It's not a complete fix but it's a meaningful piece of the puzzle and the bedroom changes were cheap.
